Georgian girls are not as popular as other Eastern Europeans. They are oftentimes the mysterious type. And they also don’t look Slavic. But Russians and Ukrainians aren’t the only great girlfriend material in Eastern Europe. In this article, we’re giving you the breakdown on meeting, dating, and keeping a Georgian woman. Read on to find out the truth about these beautiful girls!
This seems to be a huge stereotype. Georgia is patriarchal. People are super religious. Parents raise their girls to give birth to as many babies as possible. Everyone is suspicious of foreigners.
And, frankly, there is some truth to that. Though sexism is nowhere as rampant as it used to be, some things are okay…that really wouldn’t be elsewhere. The double standard on female vs male sexuality is just one of the examples. Sexual assault is still a very big problem. Victim blaming and slut shaming are, too. Pressures of society cause women to be stuck in abusive relationships. Yes, all of these things happen in Georgia.
But no, it is not the general rule.
Sexism was not even a word in Georgian dictionaries until a couple of years ago. Yes, really. In rural areas, especially, gender roles can still seem set in stone.
Georgia practices Orthodox Christianity. The Church has gained much influence after the fall of USSR. Most families are religious and practice it at least out of respect. It’s a very ritual and traditional approach to religion. If you ask young people, most would define themselves as Christian. If you ask further, they’re pretty much agnostics who follow the Church’s rules.
Most Georgian girls see to it that they “maintain their virtue” from a very young age. The community – including big brothers, cousins, aunts, grandmas, and nosy neighbours—will “help” her do that. Outside the capital, especially, women are under a lot of scrutiny for their private lives. There is virtually no PDA on Georgian streets, and most girls do hold off the physical parts of a relationship until marriage.
Georgian media claims that gender roles are changing fast. Don’t worry, it’s not fast at all. It is subtle but it’s happening.
In Tbilisi, most women are now focused on education, instead of marriage and babies as soon as they reach 18. People are more open to their daughters travelling for school or work. As expat communities are expanding, there is more acceptance of international relationships, too.
It used to be that no Georgian guy would allow his sister or daughter to date someone outside their faith and culture. Now, Georgian girls are given a lot more independence. It’s still not true equality—the double standards, the expectation of purity, the early marriages, and the acceptance towards abuse still persist. Little by little, though, Georgian girls are gaining their independence.
Which is good news for you: there won’t be any older brothers to threaten your life. As long as you don’t hurt her, of course.
Since Georgian society is still so focused on a woman’s reputation, most of the dating process happens in group settings. You’re much more likely to get a chance if you know the girl’s friends. Even with online dates, 9 out of 10 times, she’d suggest a friend to tag along with you.
There are a couple of reasons for that:
Most Georgian girls still live with their parents. Between that, and the fact that most dates are group dates or double dates, there is no chance of taking her back to your place. If you’re just looking for a hookup, go to Tinder. It’s tough to use but you might have some luck.
Otherwise, don’t even think about having sex on the first date. A decent girl would be extremely offended at the proposal. Any girl who isn’t…might not be as pure and innocent as you think she is. Yes, the stereotype sucks. Since people in Georgia do believe it, though, it’s a great way of weeding out women who are not girlfriend or wife material.
To the untrained eye, Georgian girls can seem downright prudish. Who even wears a button-up shirt and a jacket to a first date. In summer? At a bar?
Georgian women always make sure to guard their modesty. The worst thing you can be perceived as is easy. That’s why they go easy on the form-fitting options, and rarely have their skirts shorter than the knees.
Flirting is also a lot more subtle. Think twice before deciding that she doesn’t like you. She might just be holding off so as not to appear too eager. Watch the small signs: whether she looks at you for slightly longer, where her feet are pointed, if she seems flustered around you, etc.
Don’t get too excited about a kiss or even a makeout session. To us, Eastern Europeans, it’s ridiculous how fast Westerners move from 0 to 100. You’re not even touching at the beginning of the date but end up spending the night together? That would never happen in Georgia.
Georgian girls will tease but rarely please during the dating stage. There is a persistent cultural belief that a woman should remain a virgin until she’s married. More and more girls break that rule but only with their long-term boyfriends that they expect to marry anyway. Other than that, making out can be fun but her panties stay on. Nothing below the waist for at least a month of dating. Yes, for real.
Meeting Georgian parents are extremely nerve-wracking. First of all, it will probably happen earlier than you’re used to. Speaking of early, the “I love you” also comes way early, too. Yes, I even say that as an Eastern European. Georgian girls are naive and they fall for you easily.
But what they are not naive about is a man’s intentions. Any “good Georgian girl” has limits that she wouldn’t cross in a million years. Though she loves you, she wouldn’t compromise her morale.
Presenting you to her parents and the rest of her family is a part of that moral. Georgian parents are a lot more involved in their children’s love lives than parents in the West. Chances are, they already know every little detail about you two – from the moment you met to what you ordered on your last date.
And, because they worry about their daughter’s reputation and happiness, they would want to meet you very early on. The creepiest story I’ve heard on that was about a mom who just showed up to the first date. Bear in mind, that’s not a middle school date but it still happened at the mall. My friend and his date were supposed to grab a coffee and go look at the shops (the things you do for a crush). He gets there and, surprise-surprise, the girl’s mother decided to tag along, since she had dropped her at the shopping centre anyway.
While there is no single strategy for impressing parents, the general rules apply:
With so many rules and stereotypes around dating, where do you even meet a Georgian girl? Well, in my experience, common friends or the Internet. Online dating has been rising in popularity recently. Women on international dating sites are for sure interested in foreigners. This is also a huge advantage.
As a general rule, though, both day and night game are slower and less successful in Georgia. Women would rarely talk to strangers. Even if she does, it might not lead anywhere – even in discos, girls bring male friends or family members to ward off suitors.
Though dating Georgian girls is difficult (ugh, cultural differences), it’s also amazing. These women love to take care of their guys and it also helps that they are so pretty! Good luck with them (and remember to share your field reports in the comments below)!
